چکیده

Gravitational waves are surviving witnesses of the most violent events in the history of the Universe. By detecting signals from coalescing black hole and neutron star binaries we can obtain invaluable information on the properties of gravity and matter in the most extreme conditions: where matter is more dense than an atomic nucleus, spacetime is strongly curved, and its geometry evolves dynamically within fractions of a second. The recent direct detections of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration heralded the dawn of a new era of gravitational wave physics. We have now unlocked a great new sense to the exploration of the Universe, we can feel the fabric of spacetime itself vibrating, and the purpose of this doctoral work has been to study ways in which we, as physicists, can make useful sense of this unprecedented kind of information that will keep streaming through the output of our detectors. Two main themes can be distinguished in this dissertation, both related to the physics output of gravitational wave detections from coalescing compact binaries: i) testing the dynamics of general relativity in its strong, fully relativistic regime and ii) inferring the neutron star equation of state by analyzing signals from neutron star binaries. Follwing a general introduction to gravitational wave physics and data analysis, we present the formulation, and tests of methods for performing the aforementioned analyses on real data from current and future gravitational wave detectors.

Searches for Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars: A Review

A new generation of observatories is looking for gravitational waves. These waves, emitted by highly relativistic systems, will open a new window for observation of the cosmos when they are detected. Among the most promising sources of gravitational waves for these observatories are compact binaries in the final minutes before coalescence. In this article, we review in brief interferometric sea...

Gravitational Radiation from Mergers of Black Hole–neutron Star Binaries

Angular momentum loss via the emission of gravitational waves must eventually drive compact binaries containing black holes and/or neutron stars to coalesce. The resulting events are primary candidate sources for detectors such as VIRGO and LIGO. We present calculations of gravitational radiation waveforms and luminosities for the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star binary, performed in th...

Hydrodynamics of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars: Ellipsoidal Treatment

We employ an approximate treatment of dissipative hydrodynamics in three dimensions to study the coalescence of binary neutron stars driven by the emission of gravitational waves. The stars are modeled as compressible ellipsoids obeying a polytropic equation of state; all internal fluid velocities are assumed to be linear functions of the coordinates. The hydrodynamic equations then reduce to a...

The Final Fate of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars: Collapse to a Black Hole?

Coalescing compact binaries with neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH) components are important sources of gravitational waves for the laser-interferometer detectors currently under construction, and may also be sources of gamma-ray bursts at cosmological distances. This paper focuses on the final hydrodynamic coalescence and merger of NS–NS binaries, and addresses the question of whether black ...

Comparison of advanced gravitational-wave detectors

The experimental effort to detect gravitational radiation has advanced substantially since its beginnings in the early 1960’s [1]. Two different techniques, resonant-mass antennas and interferometers, have been developed over the years, but in the last decade construction has begun on long baseline interferometers designed for very high sensitivity. In previous work [2] the sensitivity of these...
